Troubleshoot compactly

The plugin does not appear to be installed

Check your Claude Code version with claude --version; compactly requires 2.1.295 or later. Confirm the marketplace was added and the plugin is enabled. You can rerun the marketplace install commands in installation, then start a new Claude Code session.

The panel does not open

Run /cost-panel. In the CLI, use /tui fullscreen if the panel buttons are not interactive. Where Claude Code cannot draw a window, the command can provide a text report. Check the openPanel setting if you expected the panel to open at session start.

Automatic compaction does not happen

Check that mode is auto, the context has reached minTokens, and the configured judge and signals match the behavior you expect. The prompt-time judge evaluates a new prompt; a successful boundary signal can arm the before-expiry path when no prompt follows. The timer requires Claude Code to remain open. Pause detection and judge decisions are heuristic, so compactly does not act on every signal or session.

In suggest mode, compactly only suggests /compactly; you choose whether to run it. In off, both automatic and suggestion behavior are disabled. Review configuration and how it works before changing modes.

The displayed cost looks different from billing

The panel uses observed token counts and bundled list-price assumptions. Actual API billing, subscription usage, and provider rates can differ. Treat the panel as an estimate and use your account's usage or billing page for authoritative figures. See cost and cache.

Disable or remove the plugin

Set mode to off to stop compactly's automatic and suggestion behavior. To remove the plugin, run claude plugin uninstall compactly@compactly; see installation.
