Configure compactly

The defaults work without configuration: mode=auto, judge=sonnet, and a context threshold of 150,000 tokens. Change settings with /plugin configure compactly@compactly or by passing --config during installation. Start a new session after changing settings.

For example, install in suggestion mode with a lower context threshold:

claude plugin install compactly --marketplace swapnildahiphale/compactly \
  --config mode=suggest --config minTokens=100000

You can also edit ~/.claude/settings.json. Add the pluginConfigs entry alongside existing settings; do not replace the file:

{
  "pluginConfigs": {
    "compactly@compactly": {
      "options": { "mode": "suggest", "minTokens": 100000 }
    }
  }
}

When loaded from a local folder using CLAUDE_CODE_PLUGIN_DIRS, the settings key is compactly rather than compactly@compactly.

Settings

Setting Default Options and effect
mode auto auto evaluates boundaries; suggest notifies without automatic compaction; off disables both.
judge sonnet sonnet or haiku evaluates prompts in auto; off uses configured signals instead.
minTokens 150000 Minimum context size before compactly acts.
cacheTtl 1h Main conversation cache lifetime: 1h or 5m.
openPanel true Opens the panel when a session starts, where a window can be drawn.
signals git git, git+deploy, or all; wider sets include more event types and can trigger in the middle of a task.

With signals=git, configured signals include successful commit, push, and pull-request operations. Wider signal sets can include deployment or other completed-work commands. Use suggest if you want to confirm a signal before compacting.

The judge can take up to 15 seconds before a prompt continues. See how boundary decisions work and troubleshooting.
